Dove Blackout Mirror

Dove Blackout Mirror is an ad campaign launched by Dove in order to promote appreciation of women’s self during World Mental Health Week.

In the video ad, an Instagram feed showing several posts of women is displayed and is being scrolled down on the screen, while giving likes to some of the posts. What seemed to be a screen of a normal Instagram feed faded into a black screen, showing the reflection of the viewer of the ad. Accompanied by the black screen are subtitles at the bottom of the screen. The subtitles are for a short message being spoken to the viewer with the following transcript:

Don’t worry.
This won’t be long.
Take this time to take a look at yourself.
To appreciate your eyes, your nose and lips.
Every detail you may have overlooked.
You are beautiful.
More than you think.
Of the many likes you’ve given, you should like yourself first.
Don’t doubt your real beauty.
